In my mid-teens, there was a program at my church where, twice a year or so, a group of us (usually broken down by gender) would spend a weekend at a church leader’s house along with a guest speaker/youth pastor for general religious indoctrination. Anyone who’s spent time in a mostly white, (upper) middle class church knows what I’m talking about. Friday after school through Sunday morning you’d participate in mandatory religious fun-tivities, one-on-one counseling sessions, group conversations, etc. The first one I went to was pretty fun (very little preaching, lots of going to the mall to ice skate), so when my folks informed me they’d signed me up for round two several months later, I was fine with it.

At the time I was very into hard rock and heavy metal music (still am), played on the high school drum line and in a garage rock band. It was the late ‘80s, early ‘90s and I loved everything from pop-rock to Slayer and like any other 15-year-old, I was going to be the drummer for the next huge rock band. My parents were cool about my music—they didn’t care as long as I got okay grades and behaved, which I mostly did. I mention this, because it’s about this point that the whole being-a-Christian thing got real for me.

As part of the weekend retreat, we all got T-shirts and the theme this time around was Christian Youth and Prayer. The T-shirts we got had the words MEGALIFE through PRAYER written boldly across the front, with MEGALIFE in the font that the band Megadeth uses and PRAYER using the typical style of the band Slayer. Weird, I thought, but whatever, let’s get to the mall…

As we sat down in our first group session on Friday night, the guest leader for the weekend introduced himself as David, and that’s about the point where I tuned out, doodling in my retreat workbook and waiting for something fun to happen. Then I heard David ask, “Who here likes heavy metal?” I raised my hand along with a few of the other kids. The next question was, “Do you think you can have a relationship with Christ and listen to heavy metal?” Sure, I’d been doing it for a few years, right? Turns out though, I was horribly wrong according to David. Despite the fact that my teenage brain, distracted as it was by girls, clothes, cliques, etc., was able to easily process the fact that I could listen to Slayer and still be a good person, here’s this guy telling me I can’t be a good Christian role model and listen to rock music because rock music is bad. Mmmmmkay…

The weekend sailed off into crazy fundie land with a steady bombardment of the evils of rock music. Just about every crazy meme seen in the video library of Christian Nightmares got pulled out, was given a good dusting off and repeated over and over. Evil, blasphemous lyrics. Pounding rhythm = satanic. Leads to a lifestyle of promiscuity, drugs, alcohol and suicide. I piped up a few times to attempt a defense but it was obvious that David wasn’t there to have a discussion, he was there to tell us we had to choose a side. He even passed around a promise pledge type sheet where we were to fill in our name and then essentially sign a statement that we would be good figureheads for Christ by not listening to rock music. I refused to sign (as did one other guy) and of course that drew the typical shitstorm about whether I wanted to burn in hellfire for all eternity or not. I spent Friday night and Saturday in non-stop arguments with David, but at least on Sunday we got to go to IHOP, so it wasn’t ALL bad.

That was the first time I questioned my faith, and, confronted with a do-as-I-say-or-burn-in-hell option, I chose hell. It would be another decade before I threw off the shackles of religion entirely, but I have to credit youth pastor David as the dude who got the ball rolling. Thanks Dave! - I wrote this two, maybe three months ago. I had a huge emotional meltdown and I lost sight of what I had, what I wanted, why I’d come to America and what I’d hoped to achieve. I spoke with Helen on the phone for maybe thirty minutes pouring my heart out. I felt lost.

As I walked home from work, this little speech began to form in my head. I don’t know where it came from, but I could hear the voice distinctly. The message was clear - it’s not over so long as you have a dream.

So I wrote it down. I’m going to put it in something some day. I think, in an ideal world, I’d put it in an episode of Doctor Who. Writing for that show is one of my ultimate ambitions, and I hope I can get there someday. That’d be fitting, I think.
